RainAngels

The RainAngels  project began with a plea from a remarkable young, newly ordained Ugandan priest, Fr. Kizito. In November of '08, he enlisted the help of Los Angeles resident Wendy Lynch during his seminary years in California.  Upon assignment to a large rural outpost in his crisis-filled homeland, Fr. Kizito found unending need.  Nothing prepared him, however, for the area's lack of safe water in a country that has two rainy seasons annually.  As such, death and disease are constant.

RainAngels goal is to raise funds for rain harvesting  water tanks that "catch" rain and thereby provide water to approximately 10,000 school children of all faiths, who currently have no access to safe water at their current schools and missions. This includes the purchase of Ugandan-made water tanks, as well as rain gutters, purifiers, tarps, concrete mix for the bases, petrol, and delivery transport by truck.  Schools that have structures will utilize rain gutters, while outdoor schools will utilize tarps on trees to gather rainwater into tanks.  Wells are very important to rural populations, and Fr. Kizito hopes to dig some in the future.  However, his sense of urgency to get water for the children quickly led him in the direction of rainwater harvesting tanks.  They cost less, are made locally, are easier to maintain, are environmentally-friendly, and with two rainy seasons per year, they are guaranteed to provide water during droughts and dry seasons.

With the help of Jack Rose, founder of RainCatchers, who has done many rain harvesting tank projects in Kenya, and who has been an inspiration by sharing his knowledge, contacts, and donations, Fr. Kizito's Rain Angels was born.  Rain is a freely given, abundant natural resource in a water-stressed world.

The approximate price of a tank is 2000.00 USD and, to date, five have been purchased, along with two wells with a pump (bore holes).

Pilot Light is proud to have partnered with RainAngels, in order to help facilitate their vital work in Uganda.

Any donations to RainAngels can be written to Pilot light Foundation and earmarked as such.
