Sudan Self Help Foundation (SSF) Micro-credit Project

The Pilot Light Foundation (PLF) is pleased to be in partnership with the SSF on a micro-credit project in Juba, Southern Sudan.
The signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in January 2005 brought an end to the 21-year civil war between north and south Sudan. Refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs) are now returning to the south, but basic infrastructure and services remain poor. The war left Southern Sudan in deep rooted poverty, with chronic hunger common among returnees to the region, especially women in Juba.  It has also promoted a higher  death rate among  children, disabled and the elderly.

The purpose of this project is to create sources of income generation through micro-credit revolving loans for thirty-six returnees ( which will affect over 210 household members) at the grassroots level to enhance food security, sustainable livelihood and self-reliance in Munuki Payam in Juba County. It is expected to promote better health and reduce the death rate. It will increase the opportunity for the enrollment of the children of the returnees in schools, also decreasing juvenile crime. The beneficiaries will receive small loans that enable them to start and run small businesses. Priority will be given to women and disabled applicants.

I have just returned from a visit to Southern Sudan and to most of the loan clients in their homes/businesses. To see all of the pictures from my trip click here.
